Go mbeannaí Dia díbh go léir and greetings from Catherine’s House.
We were very aware of God's budding presence today as we opened the front door of Catherine's House for the first time in more than three months. Since November 2006 the reception area and the hallway on the ground floor have been in the process of being retiled. This has meant significant disruption to the normal flow of traffic in and out of the centre. The reception area was temporarily relocated to the Herbert Street side of the building. The phone and the computers from this section were also relocated.

“We must shine with hope, stained glass windows that shape light into icons, glow like
lanterns borne before a procession. Who can bear hope back into the world but us …”
Marge Percy.
Recently I came across the above quote and it reminded me of two things:(a) Catherine's own words “We should be as shining lamps giving light to all around us”
(b) those ”shining lamps” - the many “icons” who have passed through the Red Door of Catherine's House this summer. In this 175th Anniversary year we have seen many faces cross the threshold of the Red Door.

Go mbeannaí Dia díbh go léir and greetings from Catherine’s House.
Lá Bealtaine, May Day, is the first day of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Of all the Celtic Festivals, Beltane is still the most enthusiastically celebrated throughout Britain and Ireland. Many villages still have their own May Day ritual and customs of Dancing, Processions and Singing. I am thinking of the significance of Beltane in the Celtic Tradition as I cast my mind forward to the month of May here in Mercy International Centre and its significance for the Mercy Family in May 2006.

Go mbeannaí Dia Díbh and very special greetings form Catherine's House as we anticipate the 175th Anniversary of the Foundation of the Sisters of Mercy. The celebration of anniversaries is about many things. For me anniversaries are especially about Remembering, Giving Thanks, Acknowledging Grief and Sorrow and Looking towards the Future.

Greetings from Catherine's House, Mercy International Centre! Go mbeannaí Dia díbh go léir! What a wonderful privilege to be here in Mercy International Centre at this time! As I took over from Rosie I was conscious of the great work done by my predecessors since 1994. The building is in great shape. I just wish it was a little bigger to meet all our needs! The organisation is up and running. We have a vision for the future and a plan in place that will hopefully take us to the next stage of the development of this unique Mercy Centre. I look forward to being part of that journey and I invite you to share it with me in whatever way that is possible for you - prayer, spending time here as a volunteer or team member, participating in our programmes, offering suggestions, giving donations, fundraising etc. There are so many possibilities for involvement. Please do not hesitate to make contact. There is always a “Céad Míle Fáilte” for each and every gift.

We are in a spirit of celebration at Mercy International Centre! Our tenth birthday is upon us. What a rich journey these years have been and what blessings have come to thousands of Sisters, Associates and friends who have visited the Centre. Mercy International has also benefited from the amazing experiences of interconnectedness that have grown through it. A debt of gratitude is owed, and acknowledged, to all who have supported and encouraged the ministry of the Centre, and to those who have contributed both personally and financially.

I am sure that most of us at some time or other find ourselves saying: "I would love to share this sacred moment". Certainly here at Mercy International Centre we regularly experience this desire. So many precious moments happen in Catherine's House that could, by being shared, enrich our lives wherever we might be.

There is a Haitian proverb which says, "We see from where we stand". As we approach the Tenth Anniversary Year of Mercy International Centre and look back, we realize that the experiences and memories of the thousands of Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Associates, colleagues and friends who have come to Catherine's House over these nine years will have many faces.

The Team at Mercy International Centre is often asked "What do you do
all day?" The detailed answer would look much like the day of many other
Sisters of Mercy around the world. The simple answer of "Welcoming those
who come to seek Catherine in her House" more accurately reflects the
reality of our ministry here. For this issue of the Leaves, those who
come here reflect on what it means to them to spend time in "Kitty's Folly."

It was late morning on the 24 th of September in 1827 when the neighbours
noticed activity at the new building recently completed on the corner
of Baggot-street and Herbert-street. A horse and carriage drew up and
a well-dressed woman of about fifty years of age stepped out with three
young women and two small boys. Catherine McAuley had arrived to officially
open the House of Mercy, welcome the first pupils for the school and register
the first two young servant girls who would find a home there.

Over the past year over 2500 Sisters of Mercy, former Sisters of Mercy
and Mercy Associates have stayed in Catherine's House. Many more have
come to visit to share our Mercy Heritage, to pray and to tell their stories.
We continue to be refreshed and inspired by the stories of these Sisters,
Associates and Colleagues.

On Sunday, 23rd September 2001, over 50 sisters representing 14 different
countries celebrated Mercy Day at MIC. Within minutes of arriving at Baggot
Street, one sister shared how she felt as she stepped off the No. 10 bus
which stops outside our front door. 'As I got off the bus and saw the
statue near the door, I felt I'd come home to Catherine's House. For me
it didn't matter what else happened that day - that was the moment I'll
always remember from Mercy Day, 2001'.
