Mercy Global Concern - 1999 to 2001

EARTH SUMMIT 2002 - SURVEY RESULTS
Mercy Global Concern is grateful to all those who helped with
its recent information-gathering project. The responses to the
questionnaire posted on this site have provided MGC with a clearer
picture of its constituents' concerns as Earth Summit 2002
approaches. Of the nearly 50 responses received, most came from
within the United States, a handful arrived from other countries,
including Peru, the Philippines, New Zealand, Kenya, and Canada.
Some clear themes emerged regarding the relative importance
of the many environmental issues that respondents were asked
to consider. For example, the information gathered through this
survey indicated that water is a prominent concern for everyone.
While it would have been interesting to analyze the data geographically,
the lack of geographic diversity among the respondents made
this impossible. MGC hopes to find ways to incorporate a greater
diversity of perspectives in the next stages of the preparatory
processes.
Listed below are the top-scoring themes starting with the highest
priority:
- watera key resource for sustainable development
- combating poverty
- management of toxic chemicals and hazardous and radioactive
wastes
- protection of the atmosphere
- health and sustainable development
- education and public awareness for sustainable development
- changing consumption patterns
The results of the survey will help to shape Mercy involvement
in the preparatory processes for the Earth Summit in Johannesburg.
MGC wishes to express sincere thanks to all those who invested
time and effort in this project.
