Angela Reed rsm Receives Mercy Foundation Award

Sr Angela Reed RSM PhD is the recipient of the Mercy Foundation’s Cath Leary Social Justice Award for 2020.

The Mercy Foundation’s Social Justice Award was established in 1996 to mark the United Nations International Year for the Eradication of Poverty. In 2014, the Mercy Foundation Board changed the name of the award to recognise the significant social justice work made by long term Board member, the late Cath Leary. Cath died after a short illness and well before her time, in June 2014.

The Cath Leary Social Justice Award is given each year to an exceptional individual or organisation that has made a significant contribution to social justice in Australia.

The recipient of the Cath Leary Social Justice Award for 2020 is an outstanding Sister of Mercy, Sr Angela Reed.

This award recognises Sr Angela Reed’s outstanding work, effort and commitment to upholding human rights and human dignity, in her early work with homeless women in Melbourne and her significant achievements in addressing gendered violence and human trafficking. This award acknowledges Sr Angela’s pursuit of academic excellence, her life work in advocating for the rights of disadvantaged women and children and her significant contribution to how we respond to human trafficking and the prevention of human trafficking.

The Board acknowledges Sr Angela’s leadership of Mercy Global Action and her valuable work at the United Nations in New York. The Board also recognises Sr Angela’s contribution to and membership of the UN’s Working Group to End Homelessness.

We congratulate Sr Angela on her achievement, her continued hard work over many years and her significant contribution to social justice in Australia and internationally.

On 23 September 2020, in a virtual ceremony, Sr Loreto Conroy RSM, leader of the Sisters of Mercy North Sydney, and Annabel Senior, Chair of the Mercy Foundation Board, presented Sr Angela with her award, in the presence of Board members and staff of the Mercy Foundation.
