The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas call for an end to the blockade of Gaza to enable food and humanitarian aid to be delivered to the suffering people. The scale of misery in Gaza is catastrophic; the territory and its people are being obliterated in the conflict, now in its 19th month. 

We echo the forceful cry from Pope Leo XIV for “ceasefire now!” and to “completely respect humanitarian law.” 

“From the Gaza Strip,” the Pope said, we hear “rising ever more insistently to the heavens, the cries of mothers and fathers who clutch the lifeless bodies of their children, and who are continually forced to move about in search of a little food and water and safer shelter from bombardments.” 

Israel’s massive and indiscriminate military attacks have killed over 50,000 people, and untold numbers have died from disease or starvation. Around 80% of the infrastructure has been destroyed, rendering the 140 square-mile strip unfit for human habitation. Adding to the cruelty, it also is preventing food, medical supplies and fuel from entering the area.  

Thousands of trucks with aid remain lined up waiting to enter Gaza, and the UN’s top humanitarian official said on May 20 that 14,000 babies could die over the next days if supplies do not reach them. 

The United States is playing a major role in perpetuating this conflict, providing massive amounts of military aid, despite consistent violations of U.S. and international laws, and the United States has a moral obligation to try to end it. 

Time is running out. Hear the cries of the children in Gaza. Stop the bloodshed. Open the doors to peace and aid.

Fin al bloqueo, detener el sufrimiento en Gaza

Las Hermanas de la Misericordia de las Américas hacen un llamado al fin del bloqueo de Gaza para permitir que se entreguen alimentos y ayuda humanitaria a las personas que sufren. La escala de miseria en Gaza es catastrófica; el territorio y su gente están siendo destruidos en el conflicto, ahora en su decimonoveno mes.

Hacemos eco al fuerte clamor del Papa León XIV de «¡alto al fuego ahora!» y a «respetar completamente el derecho humanitario».

«Desde la Franja de Gaza», dijo el Papa, escuchamos «elevarse cada vez más insistentemente hacia el cielo, los gritos de las madres y de los padres que se aferran a los cuerpos sin vida de sus hijos e hijas, y que se ven continuamente obligados a trasladarse en busca de un poco de comida y agua y un refugio más seguro de los bombardeos».

Los ataques militares masivos e indiscriminados de Israel han acabado con la vida de más de 50.000 personas, y un número incalculable ha muerto de enfermedad o hambre. Alrededor del 80% de la infraestructura ha sido destruida, lo que hace que la franja de 363 kilómetros cuadrados no sea apta para que vivan en ella los humanos. Además de la crueldad, también está impidiendo que los alimentos, los suministros médicos y el combustible entren en la zona.

Miles de camiones con ayuda siguen esperando para entrar en Gaza, y el alto funcionario humanitario de la ONU dijo el 20 de mayo que 14.000 bebés podrían morir en los próximos días si los suministros no les llegan.

Estados Unidos está desempeñando un papel importante en perpetuar este conflicto, proporcionando cantidades masivas de ayuda militar, a pesar de las violaciones constantes de las leyes estadounidenses e internacionales, y Estados Unidos tiene la obligación moral de tratar de ponerle fin.
