Sisters of Mercy Request Prayer and Support for the People of Haiti (Americas)
The Sisters of Mercy extend their prayerful support and concern for the people of Haiti ... as they emerge from this...devastating earthquake and prepare for the journey of recovery. May they know we are with them in spirit.
Organizations with which Sisters of Mercy and Mercy Associates of the Americas are actively involved in providing services to people in Haiti are : Medicines for Humanity (Betty Scanlon rsm), Global Health Ministry (Mary Jo McGinley rsm) and Catholic Relief Services ( Mercy Associate Maureen McCullough). Donation information can be found by clicking on each organization's name.
In addition, Dr Karen Schneider rsm traveled to Haiti on January 14 with six residents from Johns Hopkins. You can send donations to help fund her efforts through the Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community Development office. Checks should be made payable to the Sisters of Mercy - Mid-Atlantic Community and can be sent to: Colleen Maher, Director of Development, Merion, Convent of Mercy, 515 Montgomery Avenue, Merion, PA 19066.
There has been a Mercy presence in Haiti since 1991 when Ellen Flynn rsm went there. She was in Port-au-Prince for 14 years, 3 at the Norwich Mission House and 11 years at Hospice St. Joseph, both of which were destroyed in the earthquake. From there Sr Ellen went to the countryside, Fon de Blan, where she was the Pastoral Care Minister at St. Boniface Hospital. Sr Ellen was there for almost 4 1/2 years before coming home to CT four days before the earthquake. She was the only Mercy presence in Haiti.
