Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Feature

Advocating for realization of MDGs (MGC)

MGC has been invited to be part of a group of advocates at the UN who have formed a task force to put pressure on governments to realize promises made at the Millennium Summit in September 2000 (see Briefing Note 1, May 2010.

Ten years have passed since the adoption of the Millennium Declaration and the historical commitment to cut extreme poverty by half in 2015 through the implementation of eight measurable and time-bound goals: The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

In reading the Secretary General's Report on the MDGs, posted online as Briefing Note 2, May 2010,  perhaps we might think about and ask ourselves the following:

1. What have the Millennium Development Goals got to do with our lives as Sisters of Mercy/ People of Mercy?
2. How can the Sisters of Mercy support holistic community efforts to raise agricultural output in order to overcome poverty and ensure food security?
3. How can each of us monitor our governments and ask questions about their/our commitment to what we said?

Messages to Deirdre Mullan rsm - Director MGC
