No. 449 | 15 February 2012

Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.
from the MIA Visioning Statement 2007

Feature

World Day of Social Justice

On February 20, we celebrate The World Day of Social Justice. Following its unanimous adoption by the 192 member States of the United Nations during their November 2007 General Assembly, the day was first celebrated in 2009. The members recognized that social justice, equality and equity constitute the fundamental values of all societies and acknowledged that a “society for all” must be based on social justice and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

170 years earlier, Catherine McAuley recognised the same principle and set about establishing ways of addressing inequality, injustice and exclusion in the society of her day. The work begun by her continues today around the global Mercy world. We are invited on this day to join in a spirit of solidarity and communion with all of creation and with all our brothers and sisters. We pray that, in celebrating it, we may be led to a deeper living of and fulfilment of God’s invitation to us

To do justice,
To love compassionately and
To walk humbly with our God. (Micah 6:8)

You may wish to use the prayer attached here.
