Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, used her inheritance in service of the needs of her time. Today, Sisters of Mercy, through Mercy International Association, use their resources to respond to issues of global poverty demonstrated in the massive displacement of persons worldwide...This vision keeps alive the founding spirit of Catherine among peoples of the world most in need of God's compassion and mercy.

Watering the Roots at the Wellspring of Mercy - Week Two (MIA)
During the first week of the renewal programme, Watering the Roots at the Wellspring of Mercy, the participants gathered at Mercy International Centre explored with Elizabeth Davis rsm (Newfoundland) the context in which vowed religious life finds itself today. Particular attention was given to ecological understandings of ourselves in our world. In the second week, Elaine Wainwright rsm (Brisbane, Australia) built upon the foundations created by Elizabeth and deepened the exploration of what it means to embody mercy in today’s world.
Elaine is a biblical scholar with a particular expertise in the study of the gospels. One of her passions is to explore the gospels with others as we bring our lives and the Word together. Throughout the week, she led the renewal group in engaging with the theme of embodied mercy in the Gospel of Matthew. The group brought their own reflections on embodied mercy into dialogue with the beatitudes in the Gospel of Matthew. They focused in particular on the ways in which different Gospel characters together with Jesus embody mercy and the ways Earth and all its constituents are likewise embodied in this gospel story of mercy.
For a video presentation summary of Elaine’s time with the renewal group, access the video here.

Catherine's Canonisation Cause: Prayer Requests
If and when Catherine is canonised there is no knowing how many lives will be influenced for the good by the story of the Dublin woman who put her life and all she had on the line for Jesus Christ. Canonisation means that Catherine’s life and the Charism entrusted to her, and which she lived so faithfully, will be shared by the Universal Church in a way that cannot happen otherwise.

Women in Peru March against Mine (Newfoundland)
Sister Moira Flynn of CCASA, who ministers with Sisters of Mercy of Newfoundland among the campesinos in Inchocan-Cajamarca, Peru, participated with a group of women from her parish in the "Marcha de las Mujeres-dignas luchadoras en defensa de la vida " (March of Women-worthy fighters in defense of life). They are struggling to defend their environment and their water against the Newmont Mining Corp.'s Minas Conga copper and gold project.
The Sisters of Mercy of the Americas Institute Justice Team signed onto a letter to the Peruvian embassy in Washington, D.C., and the consulate in San Francisco, condemning recent violence associated with protests against the mine. Also, the Institute Justice Team signed onto a letter to the Peruvian ambassador to the U.S., expressing concerns about police violence aimed at people protesting against the Xstrata mining company in Espinar, Peru.

Mercy Health Services Goes Mobile (Americas)
Mercy Hospital Hot Springs is getting set to debut its new Mercy Mobile Health Services Van.The van will be dedicated July 24th at a special event that kicks off a week-long promotional tour...
At present, the best defense against breast cancer is early detection and there are no fixed mammography services in Grant, Pike and Montgomery counties Arkansas. Clark County has the third highest incidence rate of breast cancer in Arkansas, while Grant County has one of the state's lowest numbers of physicians (2.9 per 10,000). And Montgomery County has one of the highest percentage of female residents 40 years and older (53.1 percent). This lack of access puts these women at a higher risk of late-stage breast cancer and death.
We're bringing these services directly to the communities we serve. Developed to make mammogram screenings more accessible, the 40-feet-long Mercy Mobile Health Services Van will travel to rural locations to assist medically underserved women in south central Arkansas. It will become one of only five mobile units in the state, and the only unit to serve Garland, Saline, Clark, Montgomery and Pike Counties...

Centenarian Sister Celebrates Birthday (Americas)
OKLAHOMA CITY – A hundred years ago, most homes didn’t have electricity, the Land Run was fresh in people’s minds and Leona Lucille Marie Toelle was born...
Now known as Sister Mary Clotilda Toelle, she would spend the next 60-plus years teaching religion, history and government at Catholic schools in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, moving every few years to wherever she was called. She took with her a deep sense of service, her faith, and her cheeky Cockatiel named Gracias, who to Toelle’s delight once told a shushing Sister to, “go to her cage.”
Mary Clotilda lives at the convent adjacent to Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City, now, where she enjoys playing Scrabble and cards and assembling complex jigsaw puzzles. Her life is devoted to prayer and dedication as a joyful Sister of Mercy...

Graced Companionship - Continuing Catherine’s Legacy (The Congregation)
It was such a thrilling and a life giving experience for all the sisters in our province (Kenya) as we came together for a Provincial Assembly. The theme of the Assembly was “G C” (Graced Companionship) - Continuing Catherine’s Legacy, facilitated by Mary Pat Garvin rsm from the United States...
As Graced Companions we are on this journey together, offering support to each other. By the signing of our vows during profession, it was a confirmation that we had chosen to be graced companions to our sisters in the congregation. Members felt they had experienced these moments during professions, some assemblies, jubilees, in times of sickness, deaths in family and other close encounters. The challenge is to keep these graced moments...

Papua New Guinea: Child Labour - a worldwide problem (Sisters of Mercy of Australia & PNG)
The problem of children being forced into work is one of the world’s pressing issues. In 2006 the International Labour Organisation (ILO) set a visionary target of bringing to an end all the worst forms of child labour by 2016...
In PNG, child labour is deemed to be illegal. However the definition of child labour is where children are forced to engage in work ‘against their will’. Given the pressure for survival, many children in PNG ‘willingly’ submit to work, often in appalling conditions...
