Latin America is a region rich in minerals and as such is at the centre of the worldwide scramble for natural resources. This emphasis on mega-extractives is an issue of great concern to communities in these areas. Milton Sánchez Cubas from the Celendin area of Peru is one of those concerned individuals and he spoke at several conferences throughout Ireland in April of this year. Read the report here. Messages to: Betty Lacey - MGA Intern | | UN Advocacy Experience 2013 (MIA) The energy and spirit of Mercy spilled out from the “upper room” of the Church Center at the United Nations in New York City as participants from several nations gathered for an intense advocacy experience during the week preceding Pentecost. Participants from Australia, Ireland, Newfoundland, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and the United States learned from presenters and worked with facilitators to deepen knowledge and increase skills in advocacy ministry within the context of theological reflection. All positive actions re changing the proposed plans appeared to have come to a dead end, that is, until Tuesday night 25 May 2013. | Big Plans for Future of The Gathering Place (Newfoundland) "Five years ago, we were serving 14,000 meals a year. Last year, we served 21,000 meals for the year," said Elizabeth Davis, who co-chairs the Gathering Place board. "We know that more affluence brings wider disparity among people and it increases rather than decreases the need," said Sr Elizabeth, to CBC News, Newfoundland & Labrador. The Gathering Place has launched a multimillion dollar project to enhance and expand much-needed programs and services to help ever increasing numbers of people with complex physical, mental or social difficulties. Intended to be ready late in 2013, the Gathering Place at 172 Military Road will serve more people with improved meal service, health, social and learning programs, in spaces that are accessible and safer.'
