Mercy International Association Intention for the Coming Week (MIA)
As the leaders of the G8 gathered in Co Fermanagh bring their Summit to a close, we pray that this is a time when the focus of their attention can be on the world's most troubled, most needy and most deprived citzens.

Peruvian Mining Activists, supported by Mercy Sisters, visit Ireland (MGA)
With the rise of the price of oil, gold and coal, a global frenzy has been unleashed by mega-extractive multinational corporations. Latin America is a region rich in minerals and as such is at the centre of the worldwide scramble for natural resources. This emphasis on mega-extractives is an issue of great concern to communities in these areas. Milton Sánchez Cubas from the Celendin area of Peru is one of those concerned individuals and he spoke at several conferences throughout Ireland in April of this year.

UN Advocacy Experience 2013 (MIA)
The energy and spirit of Mercy spilled out from the “upper room” of the Church Center at the United Nations in New York City as participants from several nations gathered for an intense advocacy experience during the week preceding Pentecost. Participants from Australia, Ireland, Newfoundland, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and the United States learned from presenters and worked with facilitators to deepen knowledge and increase skills in advocacy ministry within the context of theological reflection.
In the coming weeks, Mercy E-News will offer a taste of their experience. The reflection from Marianne Comfort which is linked to this item serves as an introduction.
MGA thanks Trocaire in Ireland for their financial support of the UN experience.

Fracking in Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland (MGA)
Many Sisters of Mercy and members of the local population are very concerned about the proposed drilling for shale gas in their locality. All positive actions re changing the proposed plans appeared to have come to a dead end, that is, until Tuesday night 25 May 2013. On that night the premiere of the film Fracking in Fermanagh: What could it mean? had a very successful launch...

Big Plans for Future of The Gathering Place (Newfoundland)
"Five years ago, we were serving 14,000 meals a year. Last year, we served 21,000 meals for the year," said Elizabeth Davis, who co-chairs the Gathering Place board.
"We know that more affluence brings wider disparity among people and it increases rather than decreases the need," said Sr Elizabeth, to CBC News, Newfoundland & Labrador.
The Gathering Place has launched a multimillion dollar project to enhance and expand much-needed programs and services to help ever increasing numbers of people with complex physical, mental or social difficulties. Intended to be ready late in 2013, the Gathering Place at 172 Military Road will serve more people with improved meal service, health, social and learning programs, in spaces that are accessible and safer.'
