A Graduating Fellow’s Reflection on the Inaugural Graduation of the Mercy Global Action Emerging Leaders Fellowship (2019-2021)
)
On February 20th, the Mercy Global Action Emerging Leaders Fellows (Group 1) celebrated their graduation via Zoom. It was a wonderful graduation ceremony filled with joy, hope and gratitude for all involved throughout what has been an extraordinary year and a half! At our virtual celebration, we were joined by members of the MIA Board of Directors, Congregational Leaders, staff, parents, spouses, and partners from many Mercy ministries around the world. Although we were miles apart, during the duration of the ceremony we felt closer than ever. The MELF team did an incredible job at creating an intimate and meaningful virtual ceremony for us to celebrate our achievements and dedication to mercy, justice and leadership…

MIA Board
The Directors met on 17 and 19 February, completing a full year of meetings held virtually. It is clear that the Board will be continuing to meet virtually in May 2021, but there is some hope that face-to-face meetings might be possible in November 2021.
The agenda presented a challenging mix of administrative issues, such as finalising the audit report for the 2020 financial year, and enhancement issues, such as modification of the Heritage area…

Programmes from MIA in 2021
With regret, we need to announce we will not be able to offer any in-house programmes from Mercy International Centre (MIC) in Dublin in 2021. That will not come as a surprise, I know, as the pandemic continues to enforce closures throughout Ireland and much of the world. The Board of MIA has supported the decision of the Executive on this matter. However, should it become possible to re-commence any of the other activities which normally form part of life at MIC we will do this. Our aim is to be ready should the opportunity arise…

Addressing Climate Justice
Once a month, at Flemington NSW, representatives of Religious Congregations meet to discuss issues around Climate Change especially how it affects the Pacific Islands. In the past few years we have been working on developing a monograph, to help tell the story. The monograph written by Johanna Larkin from the Edmund Rice Centre working in solidarity with Pacific Island nations and Congregational representatives addresses the injustice of climate change. It calls on our leaders to pursue ambitious and effective climate action. Other actions the group has taken can be found on their website.

Botanical Drawings in the Bermondsey Annals
Historically annals have been kept by each Mercy congregation as a method of producing a record of events year by year. All Institute of Our Lady of Mercy convents still produce annals on a yearly basis and whilst in the present day these are much more likely to be digital and full of photographs as well as text, the earlier examples were largely prose, reading as diary entries, with some featuring the occasional stylised lettering, decorative borders, and illuminations. Whilst consulting the Bermondsey annals we found some beautiful botanical illustrations. They appear at the end of annual entries, acting as demarcation between the previous and oncoming years…
