MIA Prayer Intention: Non-violence
On October 2nd, the world celebrated International Day of Non-violence. A few days later, on October 4th, the Catholic community celebrated the Feast of St. Francis. These days commemorate two great spiritual leaders, Mahatma Gandhi and St. Francis of Assisi, who still share much of their wisdom with us today. In prayer, let us remember their collective call for peace, for protection of our common home, and for trust and tolerance.
In the words of Ghandi, “I am praying for the light that will dispel the darkness; let all those with a living faith in nonviolence join me in the prayer.” Let us pray for nonviolence with the words of St. Francis…
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Mercy Investments: Advocating for an Inclusive and Equitable Global Food System
More than 811 million people globally are undernourished, more than 2.3 billion people lack year-round access to adequate food, and yet approximately 30 percent of all food produced is wasted each year.
Through company engagements, Mercy Investment Services is addressing food systems challenges. In collaboration with the Access to Nutrition Initiative, Mercy engages food and beverage manufacturers, including Kellogg and Nestlé, on the nutritional quality of their products, accessibility and affordability, and responsible marketing. Mercy and partners also engage retailers and restaurants on food waste reduction efforts. Darden Restaurants, for example, has more than doubled their waste diversion rate since 2008 and donated over 6.3 million pounds of food in 2020. Finally, Mercy and partners engage food and beverage manufacturers and retailers on transitioning to regenerative agriculture practices that promote soil and water health, protect biodiversity, and ensure farmer livelihoods.

The Holy See Approves Mercy Ministry Companions
In February 2020, the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of Australia and Papua New Guinea proceeded towards formation of a Public Juridic Person of Pontifical Rite to oversee the future canonical governance of the Institute’s incorporated ministries in Australia. In a Decree appropriately dated 24 September 2021, the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, approve the formation of the new entity, ‘Mercy Ministry Companions’.
Institute Leader, Eveline Crotty RSM said the Decree means the Institute Leadership can now proceed towards passing the ministries to the canonical authority of Mercy Ministry Companions, with a proposed establishment date of December 3. Mercy Ministry Companions will be responsible for the canonical governance of the Institute’s ministries under three ministry groups – Mercy Education, Mercy Health and Aged Care and a new entity called Mercy Community Services which will encompass the ministries of Mackillop Family Services, McAuley Community Services for Women, Mercy Connect and Mercy Services.
