Global Action

International Women’s Day and the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women

International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated every March 8 and was first observed in 1911 when thousands of women marched for workers' rights, voting rights, and an end to discrimination. Although great progress has been made, women around the world are still fighting for equal rights. As the Earth adapts to the contexts of climate change, social, political, and economic disruption, women are not only repeatedly left bearing the greater effects of these issues but also left in increasingly dangerous situations.

This year, Mercy Global Action and Mercy International Association will be collaborating with Sister Magdalene Musau, RSM. Sr. Magdalene is a Sister of Mercy from the Kenyan Province of the Congregation who taught at St Bakhita from 1999 to 2010. During the event, Sr. Magdalene will use a reflective, critical lens, to explore challenges that many women and girls face in Kenya. In sharing these stories. Sr. Magdalene will highlight women’s leadership and resilience. She will draw on excerpts from her book, ‘The Change You Want is Within You’ and invite participants to reflect on their own journey as women. This event will also inform participants of the upcoming UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and how we can become involved. To register for this event, click here.

MIA Prayer Intention: Peace for Ukraine

Mercy International Association prays for peace for the people of Ukraine. We are each made in the image of God and called to have the courage to seek justice. May those in Ukraine feel the power of the prayers said throughout the world. Together, in Mercy, we Prayer for World Peace…

We pray for the power to be gentle;
the strength to be forgiving;
the patience to be understanding;
and the endurance to accept the consequences
of holding on to what we believe to be right.

May we put our trust in the power of good to overcome evil
and the power of love to overcome hatred.

We pray for the vision to see and the faith to believe
in a world emancipated from violence,
a new world where fear shall no longer lead men or women to commit injustice,
nor selfishness make them bring suffering to others.

Help us to devote our whole life and thought and energy
to the task of making peace,
praying always for the inspiration and the power
to fulfill the destiny for which we and all men and women were created.
