Appointment of the Mercy International Association's Next CEO

The Chair of the Board of Mercy International Association is pleased to announce that the next CEO for MIA will be Sr Patricia O'Donovan, Sister of Mercy currently resident in Cork, Ireland. The MIA Members were pleased to ratify this appointment and Patricia will take up the position in March 2023.  Patricia is well known to many in the Mercy world as one of the talented group of musicians who have so often enhanced liturgies at Mercy International Centre through their wonderful singing and playing. She has extensive leadership experience within the Congregation and is closely involved in MECPATHS, the Congregation’s ministry in advocating for the protection of children from trafficking. We wish Patricia every blessing as she prepares to take up this Mercy ministry.

Messages sent to Berneice Loch will be passed to Patricia.

MIA Prayer Intention: The Assumption

'Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!' (Lk 1:45)

Let us pray that we, like Mary, may respond whole-heartedly to God's invitation to discipleship.

Like Mary, may we be ever faithful, compassionate and merciful.

Having entered fully then in this life into her son's mission, may we join her in God's eternal presence.

Leah Schiffman Reflects on MGA Internship

Nine months ago, I stepped into the Mercy Global Action Office on the tenth floor of the United Nations Church Center. I knew that my internship was going to provide me with new experiences, however,  I had no idea that I would be going to visit Baggot Street, attend COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, wake up for 6 AM Zoom meetings, walk in and out of the United Nations, help write Mercy publications, and gain great admiration for the Mercy World.

Reminder: Mercy Week Events

During Mercy Week, MIA will host virtual dialogues, Mass at Baggot Street, and participate in Dublin’s Culture Night on 23 September. The three virtual dialogue experiences will explore how Catherine broke boundaries, how we in Mercy continue to break boundaries today, and how we are called to break boundaries in the future. Sessions will be hosted via Zoom at 9pm (Dublin) for 1.5 hours in both English and Spanish. To register for the sessions please click here. Additionally, all are invited to Mercy Day Mass at 12pm noon on Saturday, 24 September. To register to attend mass in-person, please call MIC or email Thomas, MIC receptionist, at info@mercyinternational.ie.

Sister Aelred Receives Honorary Degree from University of Edinburgh

Professor Enda Delaney, who nominated Sr Aelred for the award, said: "Around us in this beautiful city of Edinburgh, there are inequalities we see every day. There are a few individuals who don’t look the other way, and have devoted their lives to working with the people on the margins of society. Today we honour one of them—Sister Aelred Timmins. Her selfless championing of the poor, the marginalised, the homeless, asylum seekers, migrants, those recovering from addictions and indeed many others, is a shining example of how compassion and kindness can make the world a better place for everybody. Having come to know Sister Aelred, I can say how much she is a beacon of hope and the embodiment of faith in practice."

August Pope Video: For Small Businesses

Everyone knows that the crisis, which we have not left behind us yet, has very serious socio-economic consequences. Not only for large companies, but above all for small and medium-sized businesses, craftsmen, “stores, workshops, cleaning businesses, transportation businesses, and so many others.” Their sacrifice to find a way out of this crisis, to save their business and their employees, has been huge. “With courage, with effort, with sacrifice, they invest in life creating wellbeing, opportunities, and work.” Pope Francis has chosen to thank them for their work in his prayer intention for the month of August. Let us join his expression of gratitude by sharing this video.
