MIA Prayer Intention: Climate Justice

Mercy International prays for safe places for women experiencing violence. During the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence, we are especially mindful of the critical role we can each play in the lives of women and girls experiencing violence. We pray…

“Where is your safe place? As Christians, we understand God to be our stronghold, our place of refuge – a God of solidarity in suffering. How can we join with God, by standing in solidarity with women and children who do not have a safe refuge from violence? The Istanbul Convention the gold standard framework on violence against women, recommends one woman’s refuge space per 10,000 population. A refuge is a safe haven, but every day, women and children are turned away because of lack of space. Pray for the women who need to access the refuges, for women who are healing from trauma, for staff on the frontline and for the provision of adequate supplies of emergency refuge accommodation.”

Prayer Selected from Prayers and Reflections for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and Abuse.

November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, also marks the launch of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence. Gender oppression is intricately linked to the climate crisis. Women are disproportionately at risk from climate-related disasters yet barred from spaces of power that seek a solution. In the context of environmental disasters and gender-blind climate policies, women are increasingly vulnerable to domestic violence and trafficking.

Breaking Boundaries: A Mercy Response to People on the Move Issue Spotlight #3 - Meeting Needs and Upholding Rights

The Mercy Global Action Migration Task Force’s report ‘Breaking Boundaries: A Mercy Response to People on the Move’ was born from a collection of stories and experiences of Mercy's work with migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers around the world, tied together by human rights-based critical analysis and Catholic social teaching. From this report, MGA presents a series of infographics to further explore how Mercy continues to respond.

Mercy Partners (AUS): Where can you give the gift of kindness in this Advent season?

I never tire of being amazed at the presence of kindness. Perhaps that’s due to living in an age when world news includes vast amounts of humanity’s unkindness … if I look for kind deeds, I’ll find that my world has an abundance of these … a good portion of kindness goes by unnoticed. In a way, kindness is like a little miracle. We go about our day expecting it to be quite ordinary and then someone’s thoughtfulness touches us with comfort, assistance, needed joy, assurance, laughter, hope-filled insight, or some other form of blessedness (Joyce Rupp: Return to the Root. 2021. 24).
