MIA Prayer Intention: Mental Health
May marks World Mental Health Month. Pope Francis spoke of mental health in 2021 stating, “…I would like, to remember our brothers and sisters affected by mental disorders and also the victims, often young, of suicide. Let us pray for them and for their families, so that they are not left alone or discriminated against, but welcomed and supported." This call for hospitality and compassion is foundational to our Mercy charism. We join Pope Francis as we in the Mercy world continue to ‘model a world of welcome and inclusion.’
Let us hold those struggling with mental health and pray that God may ‘take from their hearts all painful anxiety’.
Together, we pray…
The righteous cry out, the Lord hears
and he rescues them from all their afflictions.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted,
saves those whose spirit is crushed. Psalm 34:18-20
Loving God, reach out to those who experience mental illness. Lift their burdens, calm their anxiety, and quiet their fears. Surround them with your healing presence so that they may know that they are not alone. Amen.
Prayer: Adapted from CHA.

Funeral Mass for Sister Mary Sullivan
The Liturgy of Christian Burial for Sister Mary Sullivan, who entered eternal life on March 21, was recorded for those who were unable to view the livestream of the funeral. We are also honored to share a poem composed by Sister Mary Wickham upon the passing of Sister Mary Sullivan, and which was read by Institute President Sister Pat McDermott at her funeral Mass on April 1. NCR publishes article by Mercy Associate, Mark Piper
Marks article titled My daughter's first Communion has me pondering the souls and soles of saints challenges the reader to consider the movement of spirituality, highlighting Catherine McAuley. In part, the article reads, “In the Gospel of John, John the Baptist speaks of not being worthy to loosen the ties of the sandals of the one to come: Jesus. We know that this humility isn’t because of the expensive nature of Jesus' shoes, but because of the nature of the one wearing the shoes. In the journey of faith we are each called to take, it is about who we are and who we encounter, where we are and where we are going — and how God is in all of this tripping about! …Catherine McAuley also came to mind, for on her deathbed she not only ordered a directive to see that the sisters ‘get a good cup of tea,’ but she also asked that her old, tattered boots be tossed into the fire.”

The Pope Video for May: For ecclesial movements and groups
A living Church is a Church in movement. And ecclesial movements, as Pope Francis says in this month’s video, “are a gift, they are a treasure in the Church.” Just as the apostles received the gift of proclaiming the Resurrection in different languages on Pentecost two thousand years ago, so today, ecclesial movements and groups speak “different languages,” the Pope explains. And “each day,” through their creativity, “they rediscover in their charism new ways of showing the attractiveness and the newness of the Gospel.”

St. Joseph Mercy Hospital (Guyana, South America) creates herbal garden
Sister Anna Regina Gakuhi’s recent blog reads, “The St. Joseph Mercy Hospital herbal garden was the Sisters of Mercy Associates’ original idea…
The reason for this herbal garden was to have the staff take care of it and enjoy the produce. I organize and involve the staff in weeding, trimming, watering and harvesting. We often discuss the use of the herbs we are tending. I notice that some staff are passionate about caring for the herbs and have brought some from their own gardens to add to our shared hospital garden. Others have asked for cuttings to start their own.
Although our garden may be small, its impact is large. We are taking care of Mother Earth as our herbs are naturally grown.”
