Maria Lawton rsm appointed as Chair of the Board of MIA

Maria Lawton rsm has been appointed as Chair of the Board of Mercy International Association (MIA). The appointment was made by the Members of MIA at their recent meeting in Dublin which concluded on Sunday 17 May.

Maria is Congregation Bursar of the Sisters of Mercy Parramatta Congregation, Australia. She brings the experience of life and activities in Mercy in Australia including experience in a variety of settings in clinical and education roles in her Nursing ministry. She has served in leadership and governance roles on Boards for the Parramatta congregation and other organisations and in recent years she has been a member and Vice-Chair of the MIA Board.

Commenting on her appointment Maria said: "At this exciting time in the life of Mercy International Association (MIA) as we approach the 200th Anniversary of the opening of the first House of Mercy in Baggot Street and look to the future role of MIA in Mercy’s ever evolving global presence, I feel both humbled and privileged to have been appointed by the Members as the Chair of the MIA Board.

"I am fortunate to be surrounded and supported, by a committed, generous, capable and creative team of Directors who work as one team, in the true spirit of Mercy, in the support of MIA’s mission and of one another. I look forward to working with our dedicated CEO Mary O’Donovan, who is tireless in all her efforts in her leadership of MIA; and also the gifted and hardworking team Mary has created who support every aspect of MIA’s mission.

“I look forward to a strong, vibrant and exciting future for MIA, as together we respond to the invitations before us in the unfolding story of Mercy and, as Catherine suggests, ‘while we place our confidence in God, we must act as if success depended on our own exertions’.”

New Vice-Chair of the MIA Board

The new Vice-Chair of the MIA Board is Tylia B Oladipo. Tylia is the Executive Director of the Institute Office of Association and a Mercy Associate with the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, leading 3,000 Associates across 11 countries.

As an Anti-Racism and Racial Equity facilitator, she champions justice and inclusivity. In her church, she serves as a Pastoral Care Minister and Spiritual Director, guiding people toward a deeper connection with God.

She holds a BA in communications, a Master of Arts in Faith and Leadership Formation. She is also a graduate of the Mercy Emerging Leaders Fellowship Programme.

The Members and Directors paid tribute to three of the Board of Directors who finish their terms on the board this year.

Sheila Carney rsm has stepped down as Chair; Sue Clarke stepped down as director and later in the year Kevin Hoy will also step down as director.

The Members and Directors of MIA paid tribute to Sheila, Susan and Kevin and expressed their gratitude for the work that has been done during their time on the board not least the enormous task of the stewardship of the essential works taking place at the moment in Catherine’s House.

Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of Mercy International Association took place on Sunday 17th May. The Annual Report and Financial Statements will be published shortly.
