MIA Prayer Intention: Pray for Victims of Torture
Saturday, 26 June marked the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. In a statement released this week by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner, we learn that COVID 19 has exacerbated the risk of ill-treatment and torture worldwide. The report highlights the ‘particularly vulnerable situation of people in detention or confined in closed spaces, where social distancing is practically impossible.’ The report also reflected on ‘the pre-existing unfavourable medical conditions of detainees, which have contributed to a rapid spread of COVID-19, with potentially deadly consequences’.
Let us pray for all people deprived of their liberty who are experiencing inhumane and degrading treatment.
God of justice and mercy, help us remember this day that you have created each and every person with dignity and worth
We pray for every life that has been touched by torture, both those tortured and the torturers. We pray for restoration and peace
We pray for fortitude in the face of fear and that we might do what is right and just. We pray for courage to speak out
We pray for governments and persons who seek to prevent torture and who support survivors of torture. We pray that we too may play our part in ending torture
We pray for strength and steadfastness in the work of repairing the world. In all things may we honour you and the dignity of each person. Amen.
