Progress towards a Global Compact for the Environment

As proposed by the Government of France last September at the UN General Assembly Summit, the United Nations has begun talks of a Global Compact on the Environment as a "new step" of the Paris Agreement. "On May 10, 2018, the UN General Assembly adopted by a very large majority [145 votes in favor] the resolution paving the way for the negotiation of a Global Pact for the Environment". While negotiations have yet to start, this Compact has the potential to create essential "environmental standards [that] will apply to everyone, regardless of the country...and facilitate international business processes and respect for their social and environmental responsibilities."
