World Oceans Day, 8 June 2020
)
Monday June 8th marks the United Nations’ annual World Oceans Day. We will celebrate the importance of the one ocean that unites all people around the world with this year’s theme: Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean. As we begin the lead-up year to the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, the theme of sustainable innovation is key to focusing conservation and development efforts.
As a plant we depend on our ocean, yet our pollution is degrading this delicate ecosystem. The ocean absorbs carbon dioxide leading to acidification. Plastics pollute our common waters killing animals through entrapment and ingestion. Overfishing and poor management decimates the biodiversity we depend on for food and medicines. In response to this degradation we must join Peter Thomson, the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, in the effort to preserve and protect at least 30% of the ocean.
Join the movement by participating in The Official United Nations World Oceans Day virtual event here. You can also plan and register your own event here or sign the Together We Can petition for improved ocean protections.
