Moreover, several unique artefacts from Catherine McAuley's life and mission are on display.

    New Permanent Exhibition

Dublin-born Catherine McAuley is renowned for her lifelong commitment to social justice.

This exhibition explores the life and times of Catherine McAuley. It begins with her early life in Dublin. Then, it follows the establishment of the House of Mercy in 1827. Finally, it concludes with the death of Catherine McAuley in 1841.

    Addressing Poverty

Throughout her life, Catherine McAuley felt compelled to assist the less fortunate. The House of Mercy stands as a testament to her unwavering vision. This exhibition delves into the material history of the house, the social environment in which Catherine McAuley and her companions operated, and the daily routines and religious practices of the first Sisters of Mercy. It reveals a woman who had a profound connection with God, was a natural leader, and an inspiration to many.

    A House of Welcome

Since its inception in 1827, the House of Mercy has embodied the values of hospitality, unity, and welcome. On December 12, 1831, Catherine McAuley, Mary Ann Doyle, and Mary Elizabeth Harley took their vows as the first Sisters of Mercy at Presentation Convent, George’s Hill. This event signified the beginning of the charism of Mercy as it exists today. By the time of Catherine McAuley’s death in 1841, there were 100 Sisters of Mercy serving in ten foundations across Ireland and England. Today, the Sisters of Mercy and our partners in ministry assist men, women, and children across the globe.
