Third Sunday of Advent – 14th of December 2025

A reflection on Joy by Caroline Thompson

The Third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete Sunday – the candle which is lit in churches around the world is pink. Gaudete Sunday focuses on joy. There is much joy in the approach of the Christmas season: the food, friends and festivities. There is joy in the start of the new liturgical year and the birth of the baby Jesus in the manger in Bethlehem beginning a whole new chapter in the human-divine story.

    Woven into God's Love

Advent invites us to celebrate how much we are woven into God’s love and our connectedness with all of creation. Franciscan Ilia Delio describes the source of this joy: You are a sacred image of the Divine ... This is the joy of understanding and accepting that we are sacred because of God’s presence within us.

In a world of terrible violence, of environmental degradation, of open racism, of refugees abandoned for political expediency, of ‘othering’ on the basis of colour, creed and nationality, the advent message of joy can be hard to hear over negativity and loss of hope.

    Advent Candle of Joy

While we cannot change the bigger picture, the Advent candle of joy reminds us that we can honour the presence of God in all of those we meet on a daily basis.

In Eastern religions people great one another with hands pressed together in prayer position, palms touching and fingers pointing upwards, a bow and the single word ‘namaste’ which translated means ‘the God in me greets the God in you or I bow to the divine in you”.

What a wonderful affirmation of the Advent message of love and joy.

    A rose-coloured heart

We often speak of rose-coloured glasses – let’s take a rose-coloured heart and mind into our world this Advent season.

As we light the candle of joy, at home or in our faith community:

Let’s consider how our organisations can be mangers of love in our world.

Let’s appreciate the beauty of our world.

Let’s listen for the voices of peace, compassion and justice.

Let’s notice those around us who are lonely or isolated.

Let’s speak up for the voiceless and marginalised.

    Let’s practice acts of kindness.
